the only thing you can change

mnmlist: the only thing you can change

http://mnmlist.com/small-changes

You can’t change your entire life.
You can only change your next action.

You can’t change a relationship with a loved one.
You can only change your next interaction.

You can’t change your entire job.
You can only change your next task.

You can’t change your body composition.
You can only change your next meal.

You can’t change your fitness level.
You can only start moving.

You can’t declutter your entire life.
You can only choose to get rid of one thing, right now.

You can’t eliminate your entire debt.
You can only make one payment, or buy one less unnecessary item.

You can’t change the past, or control the future.
You can only change what you’re doing right now.

You can’t change everything.
You can only change one, small thing.
And that’s all it takes.

i love the mnmlist blog

You are an Angel and your Life is your message

.

"You are an Angel and your Life is your message"
from Don Miguel Ruiz, author

MT 7:7 "Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.

Don’t just pretend that you love others: really love them. Hate what is wrong. Stand on the side of the good. Love each other with brotherly affection and take delight in honoring each other. Romans 12: 9-10 TLB ( Hate the bad deed NOT the person )

Don’t be selfish; don’t live to make a good impression on others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourself. Don’t just think about your own affairs, but be interested in others, too, and in what they are doing. Philippians 2: 3-4 TLB

And may you be able to feel and understand, as all God’s children should, how long, how wide, how deep, and how high His LOVE really is; and to experience this love for yourselves, though it is so great that you will never see the end of it or fully know or understand it. And so at last you will be filled up with God himself. Ephesians 3: 18-19 TLB

Matthew 5
3 Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
5 Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
7 Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.
8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Acercate a mi alma y redimela;
Librame a causa de mis enemigos

Tu sabes mi afrenta, mi confusion y mi oprobio;
Delante de ti estan todos mis adversarios.
El escarnió ha quebrantado mi corazon y estoy acongojado
Esperé quien se compadeciese de mi, y no lo hubo;
y Consoladores, y ninguno halle
Me pusieron ademas hiel por comida
y en mi sed me dieron a beber vinagre

Psalm 69:19

A quien torturan?

See the least of these
I am there

Gracias al Redentor
yo siempre hallé consoladores,
amigas, y quien me sirviera buenos consejos
y amor
pero muchos son los que lloran
y no encuentran quien les de alivio
muriendo de hambre, sed, sequias
y torturas sin razon de ser

To Reach Paradise

I love these words Ms. Brown cites. They speak of God's love for all of us. One day we will choose to confine our cruelties, fears and hatreds to the pit, and live in a paradise of life, love, and laughter.

‘Do you think that I like to see wicked people die?’ says the Lord. ‘Of course not. I want them to turn from their wicked ways and Live. - Ezekiel 18:23

In the Talmud, we find a curious story of a master sage, Rabbi Meir, who was praying for the death of two robbers. His famous wife, Bruria, overheard his prayer and corrected him. ”Let sins be uprooted from the earth, and the wicked will be no more” (Psalm 104:35). “It doesn’t say ‘Let the sinners be uprooted’,” Bruria corrected him. “It says, ‘Let the sins be uprooted’.” You shouldn’t pray that these criminals will die; you should pray that they should repent. And then “the wicked will be no more.”

Life Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness

"This is the myth of Government as ... the all wise or all good ENTITY, as if those people knew better what our money ought to be spent on. They don't. Bureaucrats and politicians spend money according to their agenda. There is no such thing as the public interest aside from those the Founders identified, to protect our basic rights" - Tibor Machan on BookTv, Cspan2, 05-1-11

Endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness - Declaration of Independence - Thomas Jefferson

We, our children and the generations yet to come have a basic right to clean water. We have a basic right to clean air. We have a basic right to have our LIVES protected from products that cause bodily harm or death, whether by poisons that cause cancer or by other means. These are basic rights. I have a basic free speech right to protest using the children of this nation as cannon fodder to protect the self-interest of corporations who do business with tyrannical regimes. The protection of the ecosystem and wildlife is the protection of our basic rights and our children's rights; The right to LIFE. Wealth does NOT endow the right to deprive the citizens of this nation, nor the 'generations to come', of these basic rights, nor to assume, wrongly, that money gives special privileges in the halls of our legislature to undermine our protections for these basic rights.

Some conservatives seem to believe that Corporations and Business people are angels and the government is the devil.

Some liberals seem to believe that government is the angel and corporations are the devil.

I believe that people, both in corporations and government, can act to the 'better angels of their natures," as Abraham Lincoln said, but that we require both LIMITED government and REGULATIONS to limit corporations, because NONE of us are angels, but simply human, and even in the best circumstances, will take actions that harm others, believing our own good in that moment to be paramount. Human beings still often seek their own good at the cost of the good of others. Neither wealth nor poverty is a determining factor of a person's morality or lack thereof.

Consider:

'What is one little oil spill here and there. What harm not testing a drug fully if the initial results look good? We need to rush it to market before the competition gets the lead on us. We ran out of one of the ingredients to make dry wall, there's some stuff over there in the lot next door; let's just use that. We don't have to worry about the hugely inflated prices of homes and their imminent collapse and effect on even those who don't own homes, because we've developed securities to pass on the entire Risk to investors and we have to keep selling, that's our job."

Evil? NO, human.

The little decisions, in the absence of oversight, add up to huge wrongs.

Case in point is the earthquakes in Haiti and Chile, 7.0 and 8.8 respectively, but Haiti's earthquake produced significantly greater material damage and death, an estimated 316,000 dead, 300,000 injured, nearly 1 million homeless, versus an estimated 562 dead in Chile . The reason? Government Regulation. Haiti's housing codes were less stringent and mostly unenforced. Clearly a case for the right to LIFE.

But finally, under current law, corporations aren't even answerable to their investors. So, who owns them??? This is very clear from executive salaries that are unconnected to a company's profits. The executives, who then feel they are bound to produce according to the numbers published in the stock exchange?? Re-establish investor Rights.

EARMARKS - The age of earmark must come to an end. I can no longer see the rationale in continuing to allow them in any form. Federal roads and infrastructure expense can be a set budget allocated to states according to population and set to inflation. Emergency funds could be a budgeted allocation for catastrophic events. A ban for earmarks seems to me an especially necessary step moving forward. Their relatively small impact on the overall budget does not diminish their huge impact on shaking the faith of the citizenry in government, and consequently their faith in the value of ethical and moral conduct for the better functioning of society.

So what are we going to do about this???

The problem isn't the middle class. As some conservatives point out when recommending tax cuts for the wealthy, they make hardly any difference to the moneys that fund government, because it's mostly the middle class that funds government. On taxation without representation, simply by the millions in lobbying that corporations pour into Congress to represent their interest, this would and does demand a higher tax burden. I would propose a flat tax across the board, with only a tax credit for charities and children, as they are a resource to the nation, and no other loopholes, subsidies, or tax breaks, not even for capital gains. And an additional lobbying tax on all corporations equal to double the expense they report on their returns for lobbying. That would give corporations an incentive to work to reduce taxes for all citizens. This is just a thought, off the cuff, in the interest of fomenting a dialogue.

The individuals of this nation feel under seige from the large corporations poring money to buy off the Congress and prevent and pervert necesary regulation and demand for themselves subsidies and tax-free rides at the expense of other tax payers.

  • "Coercion is using unprovoked force on people, ones who haven’t violated the rights of others. If you believe it is your moral duty or responsibility to rob Peter so as to help out Paul, that will not fly. " - Tibor Machan April 14, On Demeaning A Straw Men, http://tiborrmachan.blogspot.com/
When the dialogue in the public sphere is on the cost that the poor and those who supposedly choose not to work impose on the rest of society and this is termed theft, then it is necessary and just that the public sphere also express the costs and thefts imposed on that society by false and misleading statements by corporations and by their efforts to buy our government and subvert regulations. And it is disingenuous to then whine that the middle class is engaging in class warfare.

  • "Libertarians do hold that the right to individual liberty across the board is the prime political value but by no means the prime value. Politics for libertarians can be thoroughly derivative, meant mainly to secure the possibility for a full moral or ethical life. Why be free? Mainly to be able to choose right from wrong, that’s why. " Tibor Machan, April 14,2011, On Demeaning A Straw Men, http://tiborrmachan.blogspot.com/
Seeking that government protect our rights to LIFE and pass laws that protect us from those who would through false and misleading information deprive us of life, health, monies, and property is a moral activity of a free people. Equally, seeking that government establish balanced budgets and not pass on a debt burden to our heirs is also a moral and ethical choice.

I spoke to a nice Colombian lady while waiting in line yesterday. She was buying two lovely dresses for what looked like a 3 year old. She told me that they were for her friend’s daughters. She was shipping them to Colombia. I asked after her children. She had no living children. Her son had died. Her friend’s and family’s children, those were her children now.

The children of this nation are our shared legacy to the future. The laws we enact and the blessing they bring to the many generations to come, this is our legacy. Those will be our children and grandchildren, generation upon generation. The founding fathers and the legislation they wrote and the ideals they upheld spoke to me when I was a child. Inspired me. Changed me. If in anything I add today to this nation, it is the fruit of their labors giving flower.

The founding fathers and I both share and are children of a Christian tradition that inspired us. The Good Book speaks of Justice, faith, and shared responsibility for the welfare of the community and the future. Still today it inspires me and gives me strength and conviction that the future will be a bright garden of Life and laughter blessed by liberty, that we only need to reach for that future to make it so. The Founders reached for it all and filled us with blessings.

Can we do less?

Rainbow Showers

Today I left for Yueh and arrived yesterday

Heaven is on the same level as Earth
and the mountains are equal with the marshes

The greatest thing has nothing outside it
and we call this the great One
the smallest thing has nothing inside it
and we call this the smallest One

LOVE embraces all forms of life
and Heaven and Earth are One

Huizi (370BC -319BC)
quoted from "The Great Transformation," by Karen Armstrong, p.348-349

If I ascend up into heaven, Thou art there;
if I make my bed in the nether-world, behold, Thou art there.
If I take the wings of the morning,
and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea;
Even there would Thy hand lead me,
and Thy right hand would hold me.
And if I say: 'Surely the darkness shall envelop me,
and the light about me shall be night';
Even the darkness is not too dark for Thee,
but the night shineth as the day; the darkness is even as the light.
For Thou hast made my reins;
Thou hast knit me together in my mother's womb.
I will give thanks unto Thee, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
wonderful are Thy works...
Psalm 139: 8-14

That One breathed, by itself without breath
other than that there has been nothing.
-Nasadiya Sukta hymn, Rigveda 10.129

What do I have to do
to get you to admit who is speaking?
Admit it and change everything!
This is y our own voice echoing off the walls of God.
-Rumi

One
from the calm center of being
unlaced secrets

One
spoke darkness into day

One
gave his life
Truth
God's forgiving redemptive Love
without price

a shower of Love
One raindrop at a time
trout
in rainbow streams
of the endless now

from the devotional "OUR DAILY BREAD" for June 23 :

Christmas morning came, and he opened the package confidently. Sure enough it was the stagecoach he had begged for. He was so pleased. But then his older brother said, "You really did a dumb thing to insist on getting that coach. Mom bought you a much bigger one, but when you begged for that little one, she exchanged it!"

How do you know what is TRUE ?

Remembering family living in a communist state, where all the media is compromised, where history and even current events are obliterated and created at will, I wondered:

If you are always constantly surrounded by lies,
How do you know what's TRUE ?

the only way to judge: in what way are you freer, greater, more dangerous to every Society which is based on the false and the unessential?... those who really desire to understand,... will be a danger to everything that is unessential, to unrealities, to shadows.[81]
-
Jiddu Krishnamurti

Love in all its glory has intoxicated my heart; my heart can never be closed. I have drunk at the fountain of Joy and eternal Beauty. I am God-intoxicated.[61] -Jiddu Krishnamurti

To give love, we must become independent in ourselves and be a pillar in life for others to hold to us. Such an individual, who needs no crutches for his own existence, alone can have the power to give love. All others are receivers of love." - Swami Chinmayananda

Why is it that we seem to be failing so miserably at getting honest? Could it be that we're afraid of the TRUTH? Maybe we assume we need to protect ourselves and others from it. Could it be that we believe the truth is dangerous? They might withdraw from, worry about, blame or judge us. ... Another presumption is that if we tell the truth it puts us in a weak or vulnerable position.. ... They might use it against us. ... First of all, TRUTH is not arguable. ... If I were to say, "You obviously don't care about me!", we could have a grand argument! But if I say, "I'm feeling unimportant to you", can you deny that? ... This is what is meant by non-arguable truth. DISHONESTY alienates us from ourselves! Whereas honesty earns self respect. If you're beginning to get the idea that truth-telling is hard work, you're right. We can get honest by degrees. The point is to be as scrupulous today as you can. Your ability to tell the truth will increase as your consciousness grows. - by Lynne Forrest http://www.iloveulove.com/psychology/psychspirit/truthabouttruth.htm

Risk being seen as you are. pg. xvii As long as you have something you can't let yourself or others see, you're limiting your freedom. I'm not telling you to share everything that comes to mind. But if you are not able to express someting, if you feel complelled to keep it hidden, then you are not free to choose an authentic response to each situation. pg. 51 ... distinguish between what is, that is what you actually experience (see, hear, sense feeel, notice, remembmer) and what you IMAGINE (think, interpret, evaluate, belive.) pg. 19 Being specific helps you connect to your felt experience instead of to your interpretation. pg.39 - by Susan Campbell "Getting Real: 10 Truth Skills You Need to Live an Authentic Life"

Another excellent book on this issue:

"Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Life" by Marshall B. Rosenberg

I have also called it love-force or soul-force. In the application of satyagraha, I discovered in the earliest stages that pursuit of truth did not admit of violence being inflicted on one’s opponent but that he must be weaned from error by patience and compassion. For what appears to be truth to the one may appear to be error to the other. And patience means self-suffering. So the doctrine came to mean vindication of truth, not by infliction of suffering on the opponent, but on oneself.  -Mahatmas Gandhi -Statement to Disorders Inquiry Committee, January 5,1920 (The Collected Works of Mahatma Gandhi vol. 19, p.206

Give Peaceful Resistance a Chance
By ERICA CHENOWETH, Published: March 9, 2011
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/10/opinion/10chenoweth.html?ref=opinion
Indeed, a study I recently conducted with Maria J. Stephan, now a strategic planner at the State Department, compared the outcomes of hundreds of violent insurgencies with those of major nonviolent resistance campaigns from 1900 to 2006; we found that over 50 percent of the nonviolent movements succeeded, compared with about 25 percent of the violent insurgencies.

Why? For one thing, people don’t have to give up their jobs, leave their families or agree to kill anyone to participate in a nonviolent campaign. That means such movements tend to draw a wider range of participants, which gives them more access to members of the regime, including security forces and economic elites, who often sympathize with or are even relatives of protesters.

What’s more, oppressive regimes need the loyalty of their personnel to carry out their orders. Violent resistance tends to reinforce that loyalty, while civil resistance undermines it. When security forces refuse orders to, say, fire on peaceful protesters, regimes must accommodate the opposition or give up power — precisely what happened in Egypt.

inexpressibly human

My son asks me, what’s the purpose of it all?
And I try to answer him
But really, even for him, he will have to find his own answers
I can only give mine
And when I thought there wouldn’t be an answer for me
There was
There will be one for him too

Each civilization brings something new to the table…
Something we all get to enjoy even if they never meant to share
We’ve already brought some beautiful things
But who says the best isn’t yet to come….

I don't want to live in a place where women are enslaved
And stoned - It takes two to tango
And slave trade in Women
And what's the meaning of Forced Religion
All the Earth belongs to God
What use is worship by force?Nothing

But I live in a world where these things exist

"Not Christian or Jew or Muslim,
not Hindu, Buddhist, Sufi or Zen.
Not any religion, or cultural system.
I am not from the East or the West,
nor out of the ocean or up
from the ground, not natural or ethereal,
not composed of elements at all.
I do not exist, am not an entity in this world
or the next,
did not descend from Adam and Eve
or any origin story.
My place is placeless, a trace of the traceless.
Neither body nor soul.
I belong to the Beloved
have seen the two worlds as one
and that one call to and know,
First, last, outer, inner, only that

Ode of Hope and Love

Ode of Hope and Love
to a Free People
embarking on a New Journey

The Nile pours over its banks and blesses the land

Once upon a time
we imagined that just beyond the horizon
the oceans tumbled off the flat earth into the abyss
where we'd fall off
and be devoured by monsters

but we crossed the oceans
amid thrashing storms and eerie quiet
and found instead
a new land
and bountiful plentiful Life

when we imagine monsters
our fears keep us from sailing free

sometimes we imagine that our neighbors are monsters (countries, competitors...)
that they are keeping us from sailing free
and then we find
that it is only our own imaginings that imprison us

sometimes i imagine
that my sister really doesn't like me
that she only speaks to me out of duty
that she'd really rather things not go well for me
and sometimes that makes me feel hurt and angry and afraid
and i have these internal dialogues
i did this and i did that and i was like this
blah blah blah....

but then
i remembered that when we were little kids
i used to ignore her
maybe this was a chance to understand
this alone time might really be a gift
a must be
a just for me
a Father's gift
to learn a little something
to develop strong bones
and i start to feel
that maybe it doesn't matter what is really on her mind
that i can still just be me
to share a little of who i am
give a little love
without worrying about what it means or what comes back
and just like that
i am free

a young Jewish man said in class:
I am praying for the people protesting in Iran
because i fear many will be imprisoned and killed
even though they are marching peacefully

"pide y te daré por herencia las naciones"
maybe this was God always saying to ask for blessings for each other

En Egipto

entre las tinieblas
se vislumbra una tenue luz

El agua fluye de manantiales

y las rocas se deshacen

"I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality. This is why right temporarily defeated is stronger than evil triumphant."
Martin Luther King's
Acceptance Speech, Nobel Peace Prize

"When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love has always won. There have been tyrants and murderers and for a time they seem invincible, but in the end, they always fall — think of it, always." - Gandhi

All I'm saying is simply this, that all life is interrelated, that somehow we're caught in an inescapable network of mutuality tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly affects all indirectly. For some strange reason, I can never be what I ought to be until you are what you ought to be. You can never be what you ought to be until I am what I ought to be. This is the interrelated structure of reality.

"How did America, a nation composed largely of the rejected of other societies, become the most afluent, freest, the most influenctial society in the world?"

With conquering limbs astride from land to land; Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall standA mighty woman with a torch, whose flame Is the imprisoned lightning, and her nameMother of Exiles. From her beacon-handGlows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command. The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame."Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries sheWith silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,The wretched refuse of your teeming shores. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
Emma Lazarus, 1883 - inscribed on the base of the Statue of Liberty
