"The ocean's fragility they witnessed in the place where much of the world's discarded plastic ends up, the "eastern garbage patch". This, the focus of their voyage, is a floating "continent" of debris. Nothing that the crew had read in advance could prepare them for what they found navigating an area twice as large as the North Sea. "You don't see it at first," De Rothschild says. "But when you get into the sea, and under the water, you realise that it is all like a soup, millions and millions of tiny fragments of plastic, suspended in the water. It is mostly microscopic, but once your eye adjusts you start to see the reflectiveness of some of the larger pieces. The red fragments stand out most clearly."

That's why just about every plastic bottle that was ever made still exists," De Rothschild says….. according to the UN Environment Programme, plastic debris causes the deaths of more than a million seabirds every year, and more than 100,000 marine mammals. Back in 2006, the UN concluded that . Since then the problem has only grown. "One of the difficulties in conveying it to people," De Rothschild says, "is that you can't photograph it, the flecks are too small

At Christmas Island, where much of the food arrives in American packaging, "popsicle bags are a scourge". On Samoa, villages compete over recycling plans, but as soon as villagers were out of their backyard De Rothschild watched young and old throwing plastic bottles into the sea.

It's like a disease," he says. "But we have to believe the argument can be won. Getting rid of dumb plastic, bags in particular, could be a very simple piece of legislation; making supermarkets use reusables is not so hard."

The crew's website is full of stories of people "doing their own Plastiki", pledging to eliminate plastic bottles from their school or workplace, or creating a zero waste policy. "

How can I put it in a way that will have an impact?

Do we still want to wash away our iniquities with the blood innocents?

Do we want to cling to inputing theft and greed in the system and leaving it for our children to pay to the 7th generation? Surely not this game?

Can't we think of a better game?

In my own life, I can only pray to do what my father did. He left me no debts, only credits.. He left to my mom, sister and me a humble home, but free and clear, his savings and the inheritance of his example. He left family and friends he had extended his hand to, leaving us friends to lend a hand or a good word. I can only pray to leave my son as much.

Surely we are leaving the sons and daughters of this nation more than debts of greed and corruption. But the debts of wars and oppresive dictatorships we had a hand in upholding for the sake of protecting corporate interests weigh more heavily and tend to burn more strongly than all the rivers of aid pouring from our land.

Will you wash your hands symbolicly like Pontius Pilot and pretend it wasn't you? That it wasn't you with your hands on the wheel and the loudspeakers herding the cattle toward the cliffs? Who white washed the titans of the 30s? I saw none. 70million sons and daughters slaughtered in a world war sparked by the flames of the depression before prosperity could return, so much innocent blood to undo the ravages of greed and corruption and the fears and anger it had spawned .

Who will write you a better ending? Me? I would write you an Ode of glory to rival Homer... And if I lack the skill or the sight, there are those whose pens would burn your names into the history books. Please, apply for the job.
